Whenever it is time for a large family cookout, or it is when I load my freezer, it is to Hogg's I go!
I have been a customer of Hogg's Meat Market since the 1980's. When the kids were little, we lived over 80 miles away. I would plan an entire day around going Hogg's Meat Market. There is no place in this entire State that offers the service, and quality of Meat that Hogg's does.
Their meat is harvested from Cattle they know are raised with respect and slaughtered with a respect for what each animal is giving. This means a lot to me, because I am from California, and I used to drive past the large feed lots where cattle were raised in small fenced boxes. I have a lot of vegans friends in my life who don't like that I eat meat. I apologize for offending...I am who I am, when I am with you we can do the all veggie thing...Thanks
They take the time to explain any question you have about cuts of meat, how to store them, how to cook and so on...When you put unseasoned meat from Hogg's in the skillet or on the grill, you can tell a difference immediately. People will say, "Oh, What are you cooking in there?", I will answer, "hamburger, and I haven't even seasoned it yet."
From the butcher counter, through check out, to your vehicle, home and then the grill, Hogg's is a 'cut above'. I would rather do without meat than buy it from a grocery meat counter.
Hogg's Meat Market believes in supporting local businesses. All of their products are made in Arkansas. Thank you Hogg's for your Excellence for at least 25 years. I'll be seeing you!

There has always been a buzz about the Box Turtle . Having driven past this converted 3 story house almost daily, I had not taken the time to stop in. The owners of the Box Turtle in the Heights have put their hearts and love into this small business, and their community.
Several individuals have recommended them to me for various items I was looking for . I appreciate individual jewelry and clothing designers . Similar to writers , they pour their heart into their designs and products. Each one is lovingly shaped by a brilliant spark of imagination, and a lot of hard work. Economically it is wise to support these endeavors, and local business too.
The shop is in a Historic House with 3 levels . On my first visit, (I heard they take consignment items for artists, so I was sure to find my candle maker ), I found a new favorite place to go for gifts! It is less than 3 miles from my house, and the entire area is pedestrian and welcoming .
The atmosphere of this Shop, and everyone who works here makes a person feel comfortable and welcome. The first businessmen I encountered were young Hog Fans, who were running a Lemonade stand outside the Box Turtle. They were professional, and greeted me cheerfully. This will make customers come back.
Having walked the few steps into the foyer of the Box Turtle, I could not stop turning around, to see everything. The shop is filled with every different gift you can imagine.
On the ground floor are Candles , jewelery, shoes, purses, aromatherapy items, paintings , and wall hangings . On the inside, after the owners greeted me, I was allowed by a very old soul to pat and scratch his old back. (a big dog). I love places like this.
I went around getting photos and finding candles . I couldn't help but check out the local jewelery. The turquoise peace sign earrings by Joella Peck Originals Home , made with sterling silver hoops spoke to me, and I did not ignore them. They are now part of my "signature jewelery".
Emese Boone, the owner encouraged me to go upstairs where clothing by designer Korto Momolu is wall to wall. These are styles that are hot, and are in demand. The Box Turtle is a hidden treasure, unless you live in Hillcrest and/or the Heights of Little Rock.
They have a downstairs with Candy, but I felt it best to avoid that section today. I will be back when buying gifts for others, but my sugar-load for the day had been reached. (See Baker )
I have linked the Box Turtle, and they are on Facebook. Thank you Ms. Boone for allowing me to prowl your shop with my camera. You have unique and affordable items and the Holidays are coming.
Hey guys, Thanks for the Lemonade! It was a perfect day for it! I hope you made your goal.

A good meat market is hard to find these days Lori. Just as hard to find is a quality bakery. Great info - good work!
In Rhode Island, for years i went to an Italian butcher shop named "Dinardi's" the best! cut everything to order and grade A quality meats at all times. Winn Dixie is a cheap suit compared to the tuxedo "Dinardi's" was.
keep em comin Lori! great hub, peace :)
Loved the meat market. I wish that we had a good one around here where we could buy not feedlot. I like to buy small portions of lean stuff and would like to have a great option like this.
I must stay away from bakeries! I must stay away from bakeries! I must stay away from bakeries! I must stay away from bakeries! I must stay away from bakeries! I must stay away from bakeries!
Cool hub L.I tasted grass fed beef for the first time in Europe.I thought it tasted strange at first but I fell in love with it over time.Coming back to the States,I had to readjust to corn fed...I think I liked the grass fed better,IMO.

These are all great spots! You're lucky to be close to a European bakery- those are the best!
Ok, Now I wanna come to Little Rock! With all these Hubs you have going about your town, makes me wanna visit!
I too prefer meat market meats to grocery store meat as well, the flavor is so totally different. When I went on a road trip to California this past spring (my first ever) I seen the cattle boxes (or whatever they're called). Here at home they are allowed to graze.
Very Nice Hub! Maybe one of these days I'll be able to get out of the house and go on a run!
WOW what a great idea, I love your Butcher, Baker and Candle Stick Maker hub. It's a one stop shop for all the goods, meat, bread and baked goods, candles, were all set for a great dining experience. Thanks :)
This was a really good article! I love the way you support and "push up" your local businesses.
You really are a good writter!
That Hogg's Meat Market is a trip--literally for me from SoCal--wish they were close. I love that sizzling aroma of respectfully slaughtered meat in the morning. =:)
What a great title for your hub. Rated up.
Well, LillyGrillzit, I see you are quite the ambassador for all things Little Rock, Arkansas. This Hoggs Meat Market and Catering, Silvek's European Bakery, and The Box Turtle, all seem like wonderfully amusing places. This big dog at The Box Turtle, is it the owner's dog? What kind of dog is he or she?
One line stood out in your narrative about Hoggs. You wrote: "Their meat is harvested from cattle they know are raised with respect and slaughtered with respect for what each animal is giving."
This is striking, the way you put this sentiment. Now, I know you know this, LillyGrillzit, but there are some anthropologists and other scholars who believe that religion began on this Earth within precisely this dynamic. Early humankind felt an combination of humility (in the face of the vastness and glory of all nature), intense sorrow (for being forced to take the lives of the animals) and yet at the same time gratitude (for the sustenance the deaths of these animals would provide for them).
We understand all of the rituals and ceremonies that arose out of this (the cave paintings, etc) to be the way in which early humankind had seen themselves as having arranged a kind of deal between themelves and the animal spirit world.
Human beings would treat the animals with respect, both in life and in death, and the animal spirit world would see to it that the humans would not go hungry, that a new supply of animals (specifically earmarked for human nourishment) would come into the physical world. I suppose a lot of meat slaughtering operations basically torture the animals (adding insult to..... whatever) before putting them to death.
Anyway, good hub.
Take it easy.
Thanks for buying local and supporting me! I appreciate the good comments, and yes, the Box Turtle is awesome and so are the ladies working there!
